    Gothenburg is a Nordic centre for industry, international commerce, international trade, logistics and transportation. In 2008 the World Knowledge Competitiveness Index ranked the Gothenburg region as number 16 out of 145 most competitive regions in the world and number 3 in Europe.

    The region is a hotbed of small and medium-sized companies in industries such as medical technology, automotive, energy, environment, culture, media, IT and electronic games as well as fashion design. The telecommunications network in the Gothenburg region is one of the most sophisticated in the world and the wireless network is the largest in Scandinavia.

    The region is also a significant centre for academic research and education. Gothenburg is the largest university city in Sweden with a total of more than 60,000 students at the University of Gothenburg and Chalmers University of Technology.
