  • World Cup Match Racing in Gothenburg 2012

    20 October, 2011

World Cup races in Gothenburg becomes reality next summer, just a month before the Olympics. GKSS won the bid to host women’s World Cup Match Racing in LÃ¥ngedrag June 26th-30th.
    - There will be a particularly significant race because the women’s match racing will be a separate contest branch for the first time at the Olympic Games in London, sais Peter Klock, at GKSS.

The World Cup in Gothenburg will be the last chance for the world’s elite to compete against each other before it’s time for the Olympics.

GKSS has existed for 150 years and has a lot of experience in organizing high-class championships, including the annual Match Cup sailing competition at Marstrand, one of the world’s leading match racing contests.

The goal is to attract 30-40,000 spectators to an audience-friendly sailing arena.

Many cities wanted to arrange the sailing competition but Gothenburg finally won supported by Göteborg & Co.

    - The professionalism and routine available at Göteborg & Co has been invaluable. We have clearly demonstrated what a great city of events Gothenburg is, says Peter Klock.

Max Markusson, sales manager at Göteborg & Co, sais:

    - We are happy for GKSS. 2016 we are applying for women’s European Championship in handball and 2013 Gothenburg will host women’s European Football Championship. It’s great that we managed to get another big sporting event for women to Gothenburg. The Match Racing World Cup also strengthen the image of Gothenburg as a city by the sea.
