Made in Gothenburg; In recent years Gothenburg has profiled itself as a flourishing design city with many local fashion designers who have attracted international acclaim.
The city offers over five hundred shops with an exciting mixture of modern warehouses and independent shops, pedestrian areas, galleries and arcades – all within a five-minute walking distance. The charming area inside the moat (Vallgraven) has Gothenburg’s largest selection of stores. Independent shops stand side by side with big chain stores. The moat was built in the 17th century to protect and mark out what was then the fortified inner city. Walk inside and you find a city buzzing with life around a diverse range of shops, cafés and restaurants. Kungstorget has a lively market square where you find Saluhallen market hall. It was opened in 1889 and, with its architecture and variety of shellfish, fruit, vegetables, cheese and meats, is a real experience.
Kungsportsavenyn, locally known as Avenyn, is Gothenburg’s main boulevard for shopping and entertainment. Along this boulevard and in the adjacent blocks shoppers can find exclusive fashion boutiques and flagship stores.
Sweden’s leading shopping centre, Nordstan, has 180 specialist shops and stores under one roof. This is where you also often find arts and crafts exhibitions, fashion shows and other activities.
Picturesque Haga is the oldest district in Gothenburg, with lots of small shops selling curiosa, designer and vintage goods. This old area of the city has beautifully renovated wooden houses and pedestrianised cobbled streets. In the nearby Linné area, fashion boutiques mingle with local bistros and the alternative offerings of the bohemian side streets, such as Andra Långgatan which offers a fascinating mix of shops and more arty establishments.
